On Carrying a Poem Across

Replace this with a translation and the short note that belongs beside it.

A useful shape for these pieces, if you want one:

  1. The poem in translation.
  2. The original, or a transliteration of it.
  3. A short note on what refused to cross over.

That third part is usually the most interesting thing on the page — it is the only place the reader learns what the translation cost.

Every translation is an argument about what the poem was for.
